Woody's character and design evolved over the years, from an insane bird with an unusually garish design to a more refined looking and acting character in the vein of the later Chuck Jones version of Bugs Bunny.[5] Woody was originally voiced by prolific voice actor Mel Blanc, who was succeeded in the shorts by Danny Webb, Kent Rogers, Dick Nelson Ben Hardaway, and, finally, Grace Stafford (wife of Walter Lantz)Space Mouse (1960)Four Color #1132 (Dell, Aug–Oct 1960), art by John Carey.Publication informationPublisher:Dell PublishingFormat:Comic bookFirst appearance:Four Color, Series II #1132 (Dell, Aug–Oct 1960)Last appearance:Possibly Walter Lantz' Woody Woodpecker #85 (Gold Key, Jun 1965)Creators:Concept by Chase Craig, artwork by John Carey, written by Carl FallbergFilm informationFilm Studio:Universal StudiosFormat:Animated cartoonDebut:"The Secret Weapon" (?? 1960)Production #:SM-1Runtime:6 minutesCreators:Produced by Walter Lantz, directed by ?, Johnny Coons as Space Mouse, music by ?Character informationSecret identity:UnrevealedPlace of origin:RodentiaSpecies:Anthropomorphic mouseSupporting cast:King SizeIn 1959, Western Publishing Company held the license to produce comics based on the properties of Walter Lantz, such as Woody Woodpecker, Chilly Willy, and Andy Panda. Western realized that they were paying a lot of money to Lantz for the rights to his characters, but they weren't getting as many different titles out of the arrangement as they would have liked. Western's executives instructed their senior editor, Chase Craig, to launch another comic book based on a Lantz property.
