The length of a football pitch (50m), with a main mast that stood over six storeys high (30m), she set sail from Amoy in China bound for Java in 1822. Just a few days from her destination the Tek Sing struck a reef. Being so heavily laden with goods she sank almost immediately. Survivors were rescued the following day by The Indiana, a ship under the command of a British Captain, James Pearl who was smuggling 175 chests of opium into Borneo. The detour he took to rescue and deliver the survivors to safety meant that he was unable to reach the ports into which he was going to sell his cargo, instead having to return to Singapore where it commanded a heavily discounted price. His altruism had proven to be his downfall. DATELINE 1999 In 1999 adventurous explorer-diver Mike Hatcher (finder of the Nanking cargo) was just about to give up his 2 year search when he found her - along with her grand cargo of Chinese porcelain. This cargo had lay untouched for almost 200 years on the bed of the South China Sea. The cargo consisted of a large number of items, mostly in 'merchant' quantities the cargo was after all, bound for Java where it would have been bought again by other merchants and then shipped to ports around the world. The cargo was declared to the appropriate authorities then auctioned in Germany - but in large lots. This meant individual collectors could not simply buy an example piece of porcelain from this great wreck.”
