A retrospective was hosted at the V&A in 1967, Graham Reynolds the highly repected art critic author and distiguished expert who was keeper of the painting at the V&A writes a superb foreword and details with illustrations 23 plates from that retrospective, specially chosen to illustrate the career to date of this most extrodinary artist and printmaker. The founder of Atelier 17. Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) was a renowned English painter and master printmaker, associated with Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. He is regarded as one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th century. Founding Atelier 17 In 1927, Hayter founded the legendary Atelier 17 studio in Paris, which became a hub for printmaking innovation and collaboration. The studio was known for its experimental approach to printmaking, and Hayter’s innovative techniques, such as viscosity printing, allowed for the creation of complex, multi-colored prints. Collaborations and Influences Hayter worked with many prominent artists, including Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, and Jackson Pollock, among others. His studio attracted artists from around the world, and he encouraged their exploration of printmaking as a medium. Techniques and Innovations Hayter was a master of various printmaking techniques, including engraving, etching, and aquatint. He was known for his expressive and flexible engraved line, which was influenced by automatism, and his innovative use of color printing on a single plate.The paperback has been protected by a plastic cover, a little creasing to the corners, no missing pages or tears. This include hard to reach dust and dirt, light scratches, rubs and swirls, random marks and of course signs of use.
