He grew up with the Zulus, playing among them as a child and making numerous friends. In fact Zulu was the first language he spoke, and, like his father, he gained over the years the respect and confidence of these people. Through his personal association with such royal Zulus as Njengabantu, he learned the true story of their great leader Shaka, which had been passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth.
