Description: RARE Monumental Ancient Pre-Columbian Nayarit Warrior, 19" H! Here is a very rare huge pre-columbian piece. This stands at a whopping 14L x 8W x 19H!! Imposing, yet sensitively rendered Nayarit terracotta figure of a warrior. Origin: West Mexico, Nayarit ca. 200 BC - 300 AD. An evocative pottery figure of a seated male warrior, positioned dramatically with shield raised and mace at ready, as though about to strike. The fierce figure is heavily ornamented with a headband. His expressive visage presents ovoid eyes, and a naturalistic nose. Figures like this were placed in tombs; his ready-for-battle stance intended to scare away potential intruders who may disturb the deceased! Elite individuals of the Nayarit culture were buried in shaft tombs consisting of a large chamber at the bottom of a deep pit. These shafts were almost always dug beneath a dwelling, probably a family home, and seem to have been used as family mausoleums, housing the remains of many related individuals. These shaft tombs were typically furnished with precious grave goods including ceramic vessels and sculptures like this statue of warrior, with the intention of protecting the deceased. Purchased at Rex Arrowsmith's in Santa Fe, NM in 1972. Picture of certificate of authentication. Pieces of this size have hammered for over $40,000 at Christie's and Sotheby's auctions.
