Description: Penstemon Pseudospectabilis - Desert Penstemon. Aka: desert beardtongue. This perennial herb is one tough plant. Being a native of NW USA, it can withstand rough conditions in extreme high and dry temperatures, even the desert. Often referred to as a shrub, it grows 1-3 ft. tall with numerous erect stems. The leaves are oval shaped and are leathery and serrated with pointed tips that grow in pairs on opposite sides of the stem with multiple pairs forming a disc around the base. The flowers grow in clusters towards the upper half of the stem that bloom out as tubular, pink and slightly hairy with a hairless stamen. Although this easy to grow plant hales from hot dry climates, it will adapt to gardens with full sun exposure and FAST draining soil. Then come springtime, you can enjoy the showy lightly fragrant pink flowers that will capture the attention of pollinators. It is a self sower and will come back next season on its own. Hummingbirds love these blooms, as well as butterflies and bees, you will have a waiting list of pollinators for these flowers.
