Laid at the William Patterson & Mercer shipyard in Bristol. As the first purpose-built transatlantic steamer, it was larger than all previously created, had a wooden hull, paddle wheels were used as a propulsion system. In addition, he had four masts. The sails played not only the role of an additional power plant, but also had to serve as a rolling damper in a rough sea, so that the paddle wheels remained constantly in the water.   In 1838-1840. he traveled to New York in an average of 16 days, and in the opposite direction - in 13 days 9 hours. In 1842, the Great Western was transferred to the Liverpool-New York line. In 1855, the Great Western was requisitioned by the British government for military use. Together with the Great Britain and other ships, it was used to transport troops in the Crimean War. Upon returning to commercial operation, the owners no longer showed interest in the Great Western, and at the end of 1856 it was sold for scrap.   We recommend this model to experienced modelers.
