Description: The Christmas Tree by self taught artist Mose Tolliver, known as Mose T, is an original painting on used plywood with housepaint and is an iconic example of his imagery and style. The paint colors of the tree are vibrant and the condition is good considering the age. The bottom of the painting has a area of about two inches that is scraped on the side of the plywood. It does not effect the beauty and charm of the painting. Born circa 1920 near Montgomery Alabama, and the son of a sharecropper, Mose Tolliver became one of the most celebrated American Folk and Outsider artists. While working at furniture factory in the late 1960's, a tragic accident left him with his legs crushed and unable to walk. Encouraged to take up painting as a rehabilitative venture, Mose T eventually taught himself to paint in his unique stlye utilizing found objects, recycled wood and housepaint. After many years, the artist was finally recognized for his highly personal and whimsical portrayal of people, animals and flora. Mose T was honored with a solo show show at the Montgomery Museum of Art and later in a folk art exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC.Works by Mose T have been exhibited in numerous museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the High Museum in Atlanta, Ga. This particular painting of the Christmas Tree was created circa 1980 and was acquired directly from the artist at his home. I have enjoyed it for many holiday seasons and it has been part of my personal collection for more than 30 years.
