Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare September 30th, 1967 "Playgoer" playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout and WORLD PREMIERE engagement of the ELMER BERNSTEIN and CAROLYN LEIGH musical comedy "HOW NOW, DOW JONES" at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The production would open December 7th, 1967 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City and close after 221 performances.) ..... The musical starred ANTHONY ROBERTS, MARLYN MASON and BRENDA VACCARO and featured MADELINE KAHN*, GEORGE COE (replaced in Philadelphia by JAMES CONGDON), SAMMY SMITH, CHARLOTTE JONES, REX EVERHART, JENNIFER DARLING, ARTHUR HUGHES, JOE McGRATH, BOB GORMAN, ALEXANDER ORFALY, RON SCHWINN, FRANK DeSAL, JOHN JOY, DOUG SPINGLER, SALLY DEMAY, LUCIE LANCASTER, FRAN STEVENS, STANLEY SIMMONDS, MARTIN AMBROSE, EILEEN LAWLER, BILL GIBBENS, PATTI DAVIS and HIRAM SHERMAN ..... Side Note: This production was in David Merrick fashion, full of last minute changes made in hopes of justifying the half-million-dollar advance sale. GEORGE ABBOTT was brought in during the Boston run to replace ARTHUR PENN as director and the young choreographer MICHAEL BENNETT was called in to take over for GILLIAN LYNNE who had returned to England. Michael Bennett did not receive credit for his work on the show, but Merrick did better by rewarding him with "PROMISES, PROMISES" which would open the following year. *Also cut in Boston was the role of "Miss Whipple" played by the late MADELINE KAHN ..... CREDITS: Music by ELMER BERNSTEIN; Lyrics by CAROLYN LEIGH; Book by MAX SHULMAN; Sets designed by OLIVER SMITH; Costumes designed by ROBERT MACKINTOSH; Choreographed by GILLIAN LYNNE; Directed by ARTHUR PENN; Produced by DAVID MERRICK ..... DETAILS: The 28 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors and members of the creative team, but no cast photos ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Music To Their Ears", "Status Quo", "Wall Street Hoedown" and "Where You Are" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: This playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard .....
