Description: Rare original antique engraving print from an 1840s illustrated journal. This antique print depicts the assassination of Joao Maria Ferreira do Amaral (1803 – 1849), the Portuguese governor of Macau. He was assassinated by several Chinese men, triggering the Battle of Passaleão between Portugal and China. Below the picture is a short article on the subject. Also on the page is an article and picture of rioting in Trinidad. During his three-year tenure as governor, he implemented a range of policies to entrench Portugal's colonial authority over Macau. Within a month of taking office he demanded that all Chinese residents in Macau pay ground rent, poll tax and property tax. The Qing authorities in Macau immediately protested against his action and attempted to negotiate. However, beginning in 1849, he expelled all Qing officials from Macau, destroyed the Qing Customs and ceased paying ground rent to the Qing government. His actions enraged the Chinese residents further, and he was assassinated on 22 August 1849 by seven Chinese men, who knocked him off his horse and cut off his head. This was the trigger for the Passaleão incident. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills about half of it, measuring approximately 6 x 4.5 inches, with a caption below it. PLEASE NOTE the print has fox marks in the outer white margins. The Macau picture itself is unharmed. The page has the red newspaper tax stamp in the lower left margin. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
