About the Artist:Tammy, an unwavering advocate and artist, has dedicated her career since 1995 to amplifying the voices of those experiencing homelessness. Her commitment is rooted in a deeply personal experience of teenage homelessness, which made her keenly aware of the harsh realities faced by the homeless. What troubled her further was the stark inconsistency in how the media portrayed this vulnerable population. During the holiday season, the homeless were often cast as "the needy," eliciting calls for compassion and support. Yet, as the year wore on, the narrative shifted, with the homeless depicted as drunks, derelicts, or burdens on society. This painful duality drove Tammy to confront the stereotypes that fuel societal prejudice and dehumanization. In May 1999, Tammy took a groundbreaking step by collaborating with Michael Stoops of the National Coalition for the Homeless to unveil the largest-ever oil painting exhibit on homelessness. This exhibit, portraying both urban and rural homelessness, challenged ingrained misconceptions and invited viewers to see homelessness from a compassionate perspective. But Tammy’s advocacy didn’t stop at the gallery walls—she led hunger and homelessness campaigns and curated exhibits across the nation, relentlessly pushing for empathy and awareness.
