Asrequired by FIA GTChampionship regulations, aroad version of the car had tobe built to homologate the car;Mercedes-Benz built twochassis, known as the CLK LMStraßenversion, one of whichwas a crash test car. The CLK LM began competitionin the 1998 FIA GT Championship,entering at the third round inHockenheim, replacing the CLKGTRs which had raced the previoustwo races. Driven by BerndSchneider, Mark Webber, KlausLudwig and Ricardo Zonta, the CLKLMs dominated the season, winningevery race they entered, clinchingboth the Constructors' Championship for Team AMG-Mercedes and the Drivers'Championship for Ludwig and Zonta,both with significant margins overtheir next best competitors, Porsche.The cars also entered the 1998 24Hours of Le Mans; this run endedwithout success, with both carsretiring. The cars were retired after1998, with entries for the GT1 classbeing so few thanks to fears of arepeat of Mercedes-Benz'sdominance that the FIA decided toscrap the class altogether for 1999.The CLK LM would be replaced by theill-fated CLR, which resulted in Mercedes-Benz's withdrawal from allsportscar activities that year.Four chassis were produced.
