Description: Back on October 29, 1983, a new television station known as The Disney Channel premiered a rendition of Hansel and Gretel. This strange and offbeat film was created by a young Tim Burton, who was only 25 when the film debuted on the new channel. It showed at 10:30pm just two nights before Halloween, and then at the same time on Halloween night. Deciding that it was far too strange for its fledgling network, Disney chose to never show the film again. Sadly, it appeared to be lost after that. Fortunately, it seems someone who worked on the movie kept a copy. Filmed for $116,000 on 16mm, this live-action short film featured a cast of East Asian-American amateur actors, kung fu fights and Japanese toys, as Burton was obsessed with Japanese culture at the time of production. The film's design style and color schemes paid homage to the Godzilla movies and features heavy special effects such as front projection, forced perspective and even some stop-motion animation. As the film seems to be in the public domain, you can probably find a few companies who have put out releases. However, the Afraid of the Basement release is the most unique and rare you'll find. The production company seems to now be out of business, but you've likely seen some of their awesome custom vintage Disney cases for definitely not-Disney movies.
