Description: For sale is an extremely well cast French grand tour bronze sculpture of the bust of George Washington. The sculpture is in the style French sculptor Jean Antoine Houdin or perhaps Pierre Philippe Thomire but the piece is unsigned so we do not know the maker. We believe it to be a grand tour bronze. The casting of this bronze is very fine. The detailing of the epaulets, clothing and the extremely well defined facial features suggest this was cast in a fine Paris foundry capable of producing exceptional bronze castings. The bronze bust sits a top a white marble plinth with French Empire style gold gilt mounting fixtures. The bronze also with a gilt metal plate with the incorrect spelling for Washington. This same style marble plinth base and nameplate can be seen on many of Jean Antoine Houdon bronze busts. The bronze sculpture in overall good condition. The white marble plinth with some surface grime and in need of a good cleaning. Some gilt loss to the metal mounts, but otherwise in very fine condition for age.
