Description: Byzantine Empire, circa 12th century CE. This is a large bowl that would have been glazed for domestic use; it has a decorated interior with a bird design, probably an eagle or a falcon. Sea incrustations. Byzantine pottery workshops that created glazed ware for domestic use based their designs on vessels made of silver or other precious metals. These bowls were made and exported throughout the Empire and extensively imitated well beyond the boundaries of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Provenance: Private Collector NJ, acquired in 1980's.
