Description: Being and Event, Paperback by Badiou, Alain; Feltham, Oliver (TRN), ISBN 1472511069, ISBN-13 9781472511065, Like New Used, Free shipping in the US This is an English translation of French philosopher Alain Badiou's 1988 work, L'être et l'événement. The argument, Badiou himself writes, seeks to demonstrate four "affirmations" that challenge the laborious justifications of the universality of democracy or the linguistic sophistry of a right to cultural difference against universalism that he felt characterized the bulk of the philosophical work of the 1980s. First, he argued, that "Situations are nothing more, in their being, than pure indifferent multiplicities." Thus, cultural relativism is merely the trivial observation that different situations exist. Secondly, "The structure of situations does not, in itself, deliver any truths," and therefore nothing normative can be drawn from mere becomings such as the victory of liberal capitalist democracy in the Cold War. Thirdly, "A subject is nothing other than an active fidelity to the event of truth" or a "militant of truth," inclusive of the "political militant working for the emancipation of humanity," as well as the "artist-creator, the scientist who opens up a new theoretical field, or the lover whose world is enchanted." Finally, "The being of a truth, proving itself an exception to any preconstitutional predicate of the situation in which the truth is deployed, is to be called generic," which leads to the conclusion that "to be a Subject (and not a simple individual animal) is to be a local active dimension" of the generic procedure of the work of a truth. These propositions are supported by Badiou in reference to complex mathematical theories of Georg Cantor, Kurt Gödel, and Paul Cohen. Annotation ©2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR ()
