Description: On offer here is antique (ca 1900-1910) ARECA NUT TOOTH PASTE Jar with aan under-glaze transferred/advertised, lid top. It has been preserved in good condition!The Areca Nut : The "Areca" or "Betel" nut was/is a Middle Eastern Palm nut whose crushed oils were mixed with flavorants & used in Tooth Paste in the Victorian era, because in that period of time, they believed that the oil of this particular nut had hygienic and astringent qualities for the cleaning of teeth. In more recent times, laboratory tests were run on the composition of this nut and it was found that it was possibly only good as a mild laxative. Even more concerning, that it revealed traces of a carcinogen (substances that have cancer causing potential!)The lid measures 3" in diameter and stands almost 2" tall when the lid is in place on top of the base section.
