Description: What an amazing antique earthenware pottery set of teapot and sugar bowl made in Japan! It is a glazed light colored earthenware, that is an off white or slightly yellow color, that is called Satsuma. This set is decorated with handpainted birds among red flowers and greenery. The painting is somewhat raised, in an enamel, and most of the birds are a bright blue, with black detailing of the wings, tail, and beak. There is also a gorgeous bird, mostly reddish tan color, with green highlights on its wings. Two blue birds are decorating the lids. Then a beautiful emerald green on the bamboo handles, and bamboo spout and the bamboo finials on the lids. This Satsuma set has a Kinkozan mark, done in red, on both pieces. According to Gotheborg, this particular Kinkozan mark was used around 1885-1900, referencing the book “Treasury of Satsuma”. And, according the Gotheborg, the Kinkozan family has been associated with pottery making since 1645! By the 1850’s they had started exporting their products, mainly to America, with their biggest production period from 1875-1927, under Kinkozan V. This set is in excellent antique condition, with no cracks, but a bit of crazing. The set is glazed inside and out, except for the top part of the insides, including the rims where the lids sit. The underpart of the lids are unglazed also. And I noticed that the unglazed parts on the teapot, like the rim, and underside of the lid, is stained darker, because it absorbed some tea. I see a chip on the inside lip of the lid of the teapot, and an unevenness on the inside of the lid of the sugar bowl. See the 6 pictures in a grid of the lids for those. There is one spot under a blue bird on the sugar bowl that looks like some of the green enamel has come off. The green glaze of the handles, etc, is in excellent shape, without much fading or wear. I noticed that the handles of the sugar bowl are a slightly yellower green. Really an excellent antique set, in excellent shape! The teapot is 3 & 1/2 inches tall, including the bamboo finial, about 6 inches from spout tip to outer handle, weighs 8 ounces and holds 1 & 1/2 cups. The sugar bowl is 3 & 1/4 inches tall to the top of the bamboo finial, about 4 & 1/2 inches handle to handle, weighs 6.5 ounces, and holds 1 & 1/4 cups. Please zoom in on the pictures and see the 360 degree video for a closer look.
