Whenever discussions turn to the Civil War and the Henry lever-action repeating rifle—with its impressive 16 rounds of .44 caliber rimfire—this image takes gets paraded out . The rifles provided a firepower advantage that altered the course of many Union Army campaigns. Fewer than 10,000 of these rifles were issued to or purchased by soldiers during the war. Known as the “rifle you load on Sunday and shoot all week,” it was undeniably a game-changer. These brave soldiers are no less famous and remarkable than the rifles themselves. The 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry played a crucial role in many battles. There are over 200 bullet holes in the flag behind the men in the photo. However, communication with these institutions has not been quick , easy or very fruitful : the Smithsonian, the Historical Site of Allatoona Pass, and the Illinois State Military Museum.The names of most of the men remain a mystery to the general public . but Some names are written on the back of THIS Photo. when the mounting paper was cut to proper size , it cleaved through the names. Wear and tear have made the remaining text difficult to read. but With a magnifying glass, research, and patience, you might be able to contribute information to history... Provenance: The J.W. Fisher CDVWe are including a CDV of the photo's believed first owner. we discovered the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry photo stored with the personal possessions of John Wesley Fisher (J.W. Fisher) . after much research we found there was a john w. fisher in the 7th .showing a possible shared history between these soldiers. John W Fisher’s documented service is in Company H of the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Historians believe the photo only depicts members of Company I of the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Not Company H, so he may not be in the group photo. He may have only acquired the photo because his friend(s) were in it.Notes to the Future Buyer: Safeguarding History As you know, it's a fragile and important photo.
