Description: Large, detailed fold-out map of the China coast and the Korean peninsula, printed more than 63 years ago. This map was published by the National Geographic Society in October 1953 and opens to a very generous 41" x 25". It is drawn on a scale of 1:3,500,000, or about 55 miles to one inch, and is lithographed in full color on one side of a heavyweight paper, blank on the back. War had erupted on the Korean peninsula in June 1950 when armies from the north invaded the south, and the fighting raged until the armistice was signed just a few months before this map was printed. Almost half a million South Koreans died as a result of the war, and an unknown number of North Koreans and Chinese. Tensions continue even up to today. Among the named places and features on the map are Seoul, Pyongyang, Inchon, Kwangju, Hungnam, Cheju Do, Dairen, Kyushu, Osaka, Okinawa, Shanghai, Tsingtao, Tientsin, Peiping (Beijing), Nanking, Taegu, the July 27, 1953 Korean cease fire line, Nagasaki, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Formosa (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macao, Luzon, Hainan, Hanoi, Haiphong, Canton, and many more. Shown also are railways, roads, canals, airports, and natural features. Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears.
