Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1947 "CENTRAL BANK of CHINA" Crispy "500 CUSTOMS GOLD UNITS" Note AMERICAN Print Description This is a lightly used, still crispy, "500 Customs Gold Units" note from the "Central Bank of China". These were issued in 1947 just after World War II.   In 1947, China was in the midst of the “Chinese Civil War” between the Nationalists and the Communists. Between 1930 and 1948 China printed "Customs Gold Units" notes to facilitate customs payments. However, after the September 18, 1931 invasion of Manchuria by the Japanese, and the resulting "Second Sino-Japanese War" that lasted until the end of World War II in 1945, some of these notes entered general circulation. The “Customs Gold Units” were pegged to the value of gold, which provided a more stable unit of account for international trade.   One “Customs Gold Unit” was worth $0.40 in 1947. So, 500 “Customs Gold Units” were $200.00. In 1947 this note was worth 5.76 Ounces of Gold. Gold was a bit cheaper then.   “The Central Bank of China” was located in Nanking (now Nanjing), China. After the “Chinese Civil War”, the bank was relocated to Taiwan by the Nationalist government. The bank was renamed to the “Central Bank of the Republic of China” in 1949. In 1961, the bank was replaced by the “Bank of Taiwan” as the central bank of Taiwan   "Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (General Issues 1368-1960) by Albert Pick. #335.   Face: GH158385 • Blue. • Sun Yat-sen.
