Description: In this listing we are offering a "Jewel Bank" iron toy safe bank. This bank was produced by the J. & E. Stevens Toy Company of Cromwell, Connecticut. This has a very elaborate design. Quite an unusual design for an iron toy in that the three side panels depict scantily clad women. This bank was designed by the all time great bank designer Charles A. Bailey who obtained a design patent number 41,947 on 28 November in 1911. The patent paper drawing is illustrated on page 80 in the "The Safe Bank Book" by Michael Holz. This bank is also shown in one of the J. & E. Stevens Toy Catalogs. The bank is 7 1/2 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide by 4 3/8 inches deep. The weight is 3 pounds & 11.5 ounces. This example which was issued with nickel plating only shows slight signs of the original plating. The surfaces have developed a rich dark patina from age & use & there is some light surface rust. This example retains the original grill piece gate in the front which is often missing. But, this grill is intact. However, the door which would have been behind the grill & would have had the words "Jewel Safe" on it is missing. The top center still retains the original movable handle. Part of one side of the handle, that goes inside of the bank, is broken. However, the piece broken off is present & is complete & is still with the bank. Please examine the photos closely and purchase based on your own judgement as to condition and value. This item is inventory #10,679.
