Description: Every so often you come across a collectable that has you scratching your head, wondering how it managed to survived in the condition it did over the years. This is one of those items. This University / College Tobacco Leather was issued by the American Tobacco Company as an insert premium with their brand of Murad Turkish Cigarettes and Tobacco in 1908. The leather itself is an embossed reproduction of the featured U.S. College or University. The series is listed in Burdicks’ American Card Catalogue as series L20. What makes this particular piece so unique is the fact that it is unopened in the original glassine wrapper / envelope that they were distributed in. Adding to the uniqueness of this piece is the fact that it is a glassine wrapper. Previous to finding this one I had only ever seen a few paper envelopes that these leathers were distributed in as well (rare in their own right). I have never seen a glassine envelope / wrapper before. I imagine because of the glassine stocks fragile nature not many would have survived, let alone surviving in an unopened state. The beauty of the glassine envelope is that we can see which school is featured on the leather. In this case it is STANFORD UNIVERSITY . There is a paper label pasted across the front of the envelope and wrapper advertising Murad Cigarettes and states “ This envelope contains a Handsome Leather Art Novelty useful for decorative purposes”. It also states “Factory No.7 Third District, State of New York”. It’s a big deal in the card collecting world if someone comes across un-opened packs from the 1950’s. It is unheard of in hobby when un-opened card packs are found from the 1930-40’s. Here is a chance to pick up an un-opened pack from 1908! It is a time capsule that has survived un opened for over 113 years (not to mention two world wars ect.). It is a true American Antique. It measures 2 5/8 inches x 2 inches. I have scanned the envelope both front and back, fairly large for you to be able to judge condition for yourself. This has great cross over collectability, being of great interest to rare type card collectors, collectors of un-opened packs and collectors of college memorabilia.
