Description: ETCHINGS ILLUSTRATIVE Of SCOTTISH CHARACTER And SCENERY by the Late Walter Geikie, R.S.A. With a Biographical Introduction by Sir Thomas Dick Lauder, Bart., F.R.S.E. Geikie, Walter [1795 - 1837]. Lauder, Sir Thomas Dick [1784 - 1848] - Contributor Published by Edinburgh: William Paterson Sir Thomas Dick Lauder's Edition with additional plates and letterpress. There were 366 copies printed with this being #213. This book was given as a prize to N. W. W. Thomas as a prize in 1888 for a freehand drawing from the Sydney Technical College in New South Wales. (See Photos). Contains a letterpress description of each of the 89 etchings. A striking collection of the deaf and dumb Scottish artist's India ink sketches published shortly after his death in 1837. The etchings typically display, with reality and humour, scenes and characters of Scottish working-class life in Geikie's native city, Edinburgh especially his Grassmarket and Canongate scenes, and the area around his home in George square before it was pulled down for ‘the university development’. Book measures about 9 x 11 inches. Binding is tight - all pages intact. No writing other than light pencil that is photographed. Pages have yellowed somewhat. (see photos) Very rare find. I can find no other evidence of this edition existing.
