Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique folding map, sheet XV from the original 1811 Ordnance Survey. A map covering the areas around Cranborne, Wimborne Minster, Salisbury and Shaftesbury. DATE PRINTED: 1811, dated on the map. Although this map was re-issued into the 1840's, the absence of railways and the imprints confirm an early printing.SIZE: The printed area is approximately 62.5 x 78 cm (24.5 x 30.75 inches). Dissected onto 8 sheets mounted on linen and folded into a cover. Scale of 1 inch to a mile. Edge attractively trimmed with blue protective cloth to prevent fraying.PROVENANCE: In 1801 the first one-inch-to-the-mile (1:63,360 scale) map was published, detailing the county of Kent, with Essex following shortly afterwards. In the next 20 years about a third of England and Wales was mapped at the same scale under the direction of William Mudge, as other military matters took precedence. By 1810 one inch to the mile maps of most of the south of England were completed. By 1840 the one-inch survey had covered all of Wales and all but the six northernmost counties of England.TYPE: Antique engraving printed on paper mounted on linen.VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.
