TANNER, Sr. Company C, 13th South Carolina Infantry FIRST EDITION FINE - CONDITION Protected in a clear, acid-free, archival sleeve with paperboard backing. Original, Clean, Tight, Sharp, Antique Booklet Frontispiece Illustration of the Author Excellent History on the 13th South Carolina Infantry PUBLISHED IN COWPENS, SOUTH CAROLINA IN 1931 DORNBUSCH II-927; OUT-OF-PRINT BOOKLET This original, 86-year old, antique wrap/booklet provides a wonderful regimental history and personal reminiscence of a soldier that fought in the 13th South Carolina Infantry Regiment. Tanner served with Company C, 13th South Carolina Infantry. He was wounded at Five Forks and Sharpsburg and promoted to Lieutenant from the ranks. Tanner writes first-hand in his colloquial misspelled style of Lee and Jackson as well as of other reminiscences from his Civil War experiences. Among other experiences and observations, he was a participant in and writes of one of the most famous Lee incidents of the war: “One day during the Seven Days’ Fight Around Richmond, General Lee rode right in the rear of my company. In the edge of the woods our skirmish line and the Yankee skirmish line were firing. The miney balls were flying pretty thick. Four of five of us begged General Lee to do to the rear, still he sat there on his horse. Finally we told him if he did no go to the rear we would not go forward. He turned old Traveler and rode away. He knew we were going to have a hard flight, and he was often at the most dangerous places; so was General Jackson. More than once they were requested to go back out of danger.” Tanner also writes of Seeing Jackson: “Presently General Jackson with his staff came. The general on his claybank horse came in a gallop, a smile on his face, his hat raised. We all expected a hard battle, but that rebel yell, I think, drove the enemy across the Potomac. If that rebel yell could be reproduced by a picture show I would willingly give $10 to hear it.” This is an excellent history of the 13th South Carolina Infantry Regiment by one of its members, W. R. Tanner, Sr. In response to the call from President Davis, in 1861, the unit was formed, trained and began field service. The 13th South Carolina fought at the Seven Days Battles, 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Antietam, Shepherdstown Ford, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Falling Waters, during the Bristoe Campaign, Mine Run Campaign, at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, during the Siege of Petersburg, at First Squirrel Level Road, Jones Farm, First Pegram’s Farm, and the Battle of Five Forks. Tanner provides an insightful, first-hand look at the war. Additionally the booklet contains a complete roster of Tanner’s company. A scarce regimental history.
